HOUSTON – Fresh off of sweeping their three game Southland Conference trip through Louisiana, the HBU women's basketball team is set to host the UIW Cardinals at 5 p.m. on Thursday evening in Sharp Gym.
The Huskies (12-9, 8-2 SLC) currently sit in second place in the Southland standings having won three games in a row and six of their last seven. Their most recent game came on the road against the Nicholls Colonels.
Enya Maguire,
Julija Vujakovic, and
N'Denasija Collins led the way offensively for HBU, scoring 14, 12, and 10 respectively. Maguire and Vujakovic also combined for nine of the 16 Husky assists.
Timia Jefferson still leads the Huskies in scoring this season, averaging just under 13 at 12.7 per contest with Collins following right behind at 10.9.
Marilyn Nzoiwu leads the Huskies in blocks with 26 while
Abbey Sutherland has swatted away 22 shots.
The Cardinals (9-13, 5-6 SLC) have won two in a row and four of five. Last week they beat Northwestern State in overtime before hosting Southeastern and narrowly escaping with a 57-54 win.
Jaaucklyn Moore has been an honorable mention in several player of the week voting's so far this year and leads the Cardinals offense averaging 17.9 points per game, good for the lead in the Southland and 59
th in the nation. Destiny Terrell averages 7.7 points and leads the team in rebounding, collecting 5.4 per game.
HBU won the last meeting between the two schools, 62-57 in San Antonio in January of this year. Historically, the Huskies own the overall series with a dominating 13-2 record against UIW. 13 wins are the most win the women's basketball program has over any opponent, and three more than any other school.
The Huskies return to Sharp Gym Saturday afternoon when they host the conference leading Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders.
Equality and Inclusion Night
Tomorrow's game will be Equality and Inclusion night for HBU women's basketball. Our coaching staff will be wearing all black to represent unity and an equal sign pin to symbolize equality in our community and nationwide. This inaugural nationwide campaign serves as a reminder that sports can be used as a platform to highlight important societal issues in both our communities and nationwide.
