HOUSTON- The HBU women's basketball team returns home to Sharp Gym for the first time since December 11 to host their fist Southland Conference opponent of the season, New Orleans, on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. This is their first of four consecutive home games over the next two weeks.
 
The Huskies (6-8, 2-1 SLC) are coming off of a loss against the first place Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders, their first Southland loss of the season. As a unit, the Husky offense never got rolling in the game, but 
Kennedy Wilson had 11 points, 
N'Denasija Collins dropped in seven, and 
Lauryn Mapusua had seven points in 20 minutes off of the bench.
 
The Privateers (1-9, 0-3 SLC) are coming off of three consecutive Southland Conference losses to Nicholls, Southeastern, and Northwestern State. Their most recent game against Northwestern State saw DeArica Pryor score 14 points on 6-17 shooting from the field and a six point and seven rebound performance from Zoe Cooper. For the season, Brianna Ellis is leading the privateers in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game in just four games.
For the Huskies, 
Timia Jefferson leads in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game and has added 20 assists and 24 steals. In conference play, Collins is eighth in the conference in scoring with 13.3 points per game, third in rebounding with 9.3 boards per game, and has the second highest shooting percentage at 59.3 percent. Wilson is tops in the conference in free throw percentage at 1.000, going a perfect 16 of 16 from the line thus far. She is also first in assists, averaging 5.3 per game. 
Marilyn Nzoiwu is tied for the blocks, averaging 1.3 per game while 
Abbey Sutherland is in second, averaging one block per game.
The Huskies and Privateers last met in February of 2020, a game in which New Orleans walked away victorious, 88-84, in overtime. In that game, Collins had a big niight with 20 points and eight rebounds and shooting 9-16 from the field while Jefferson had 15 points and seven rebounds. The Huskies are leading the series with the Privateers 4-3, dating back to the 2012-13 season. New Orleans has won three of the last four matchups.
 
The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Nicholls in the Southland Conference Game of the Week which will be aired on ESPN+.
