SAN ANTONIO – The HBU Huskies hit the road for a two game Southland Conference road trip against the UIW Cardinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Huskies (5-7, 1-0 SLC) are coming off of a win against McNeese, led by a dominating performance from
Timia Jefferson who dropped 28 points (7-16 FG) and five assists while making 11-12 free throws, playing the full 40 minutes of the game.
N'Denasija Collins had a huge double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while
Kennedy Wilson and
Julija Vujakovic each scored in double figures.
While the offensive numbers were the best of the season, head coach
Donna Finnie was more focused on the team's defensive efforts in the contest. "I was disappointed in our defense on Saturday so we have to do better in that regard going forward and that's been our focus this week," she said.
Historically, the Huskies have dominated in games against the Cardinals (4-8, 0-1 SLC) to the tune of a 12-2 record. The Cardinals did however win last season's matchup, 68-59, in San Antonio. Due to health and safety cancelations and quickly replacing canceled games, the Cardinals have played the Islanders three games in a row, having lost all of them. Their most recent win came Dec. 19 when they beat California Riverside. Jaaucklyn Moore leads the Cardinals and the conference in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game.
The Islanders (9-6, 1-0 SLC) currently sit atop the Southland Conference standings and have yet to drop any of their eight games at home this season. They are currently riding a four game win streak including a Southland Conference win against the UIW Cardinals. Two time winner of the Southland Conference Player of the Week, Alecia Westbrook, leads the Islanders in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game and a conference high 11.2 boards per game. Makinna Serrata follows closely behind with 12.3 points per game.
When asked about opening the season with a conference road win, Finnie said "getting a road win to start conference play was a huge momentum boost for us but it's one game and our focus has quickly turned to UIW. Confidence is where it needs to be right now and focus is on the next game."
Jefferson leads the Huskies in scoring and is second in the Southland, averaging 14.67 points per game. Collins is seventh in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding, averaging 12.5 points and 8.25 rebounds per game.
Marilyn Nzoiwu is second on the Huskies in rebounding and fifth in the conference with 7.25 boards per game. She is also second in blocks per game, averaging 1.5 per contest.
Following this weekend, the Huskies return home for three consecutive SLC matchups. The first will be played against the New Orleans Privateers on Jan. 27
th in Sharp Gym.
