BSB: HBU Splits Doubleheader With TAMU-CC

Sophomore RHP Daxton Tinker hurls 7.2 strong innings in game two

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HBU received a quality start from sophomore righthander Daxton Tinker to take game two, 3-2, after dropping game one, 4-0, in a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field.
 
Tinker (1-4) recorded his first victory as a Husky, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks on 108 pitches. Junior righthander Andrew Reitmeyer notched his third save of the year, allowing no runs on two hits over the final 1.1 innings.
 
Freshman shortstop Sebastian Trinidad went 1-for-3 with a walk and drove in two runs, while senior rightfielder Brandon Bena went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and scored a run for the Huskies (10-27, 7-16 SLC) in game two.
 
Hayden Thomas took the loss for the Islanders (15-24, 11-11), giving up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings.
 
Luke Marbach went 1-for-2 with a home runs, two walks, an RBI and scored twice, while Itchy Burts went 3-for-4 with a double and Scott Hastings went 2-for-4.
 
Josh Caraway's sacrifice fly to score Marbach gave TAMU-CC a 1-0 lead in the first.
 
HBU scored all three of its runs in the fifth, as Bena tied the game with an RBI single to center, then Trinidad delivered a two-run single to right to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
 
Marbach's solo homer to leftcenter cut HBU's lead to one and TAMU-CC got back-to-back, two-out singles from Tre Jones and Hastings in the ninth, before Reitmeyer got Cole Fluta to ground out to end the game.
 
In the first game, both pitchers went the distance, with John Gaddis outdueling sophomore righthander Jared Burch.
 
Burch (2-2) allowed four runs, only two earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
 
Bena, Trinidad and sophomore catcher Dawson Woods had the only hits for HBU.
 
Gaddis (3-3) allowed no runs on three hits with 10 stikeouts and a walk in seven innings.
 
Brendan Ryan went 2-fo-3 and drove in three runs for the Islanders, while Caraway scored twice.
 
Ryan had a two-run single in the first and an RBI single in the third. TAMU-CC then pulled off a double steal in the fourth, with Marbach crossing the plate.
 
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
