HOUSTON – HBU claimed the first game of the doubleheader, 3-2, but Lamar used a big eighth inning to take game two, 15-4, in Southland Conference baseball Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
In the first game, junior second baseman
Jake Miller went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and scored twice for the Huskies (6-20, 4-11 SLC), while sophomore first baseman
Brennen Bales doubled and drove in the game-winning run.
Senior righthander
Jacob Coats (1-4) earned the win for HBU, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five in six innings, with junior righthander
Andrew Reitmeyer recording his second save of the year by nailing down the win in the seventh.
Kelby Weyler went 1-for-3, drove in a run and scored for Lamar, and Avery George went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Marcus Olivarez (0-1) took the loss, giving up a run on two hits in 1.1 innings. Starter Zach Bravo allowed two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Miller homered to lead off the first to give the Huskies an early lead, but the Cardinals scored a pair in the third. HBU answered back with a run to tie in the bottom half and the game remained tied, 2-2, until the sixth.
Bales plated junior
Christian Dumont with a double deep to left for the game-winning run.
In the second game, Dumont went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run for HBU, while freshman shortstop
Sebastian Trinidad went 1-for-4 with a double and drove in two.
Sophomore righthander
Tyler Zarella (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings.
Weyler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored three times for Lamar, and Daniel Altman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice. Cole Girouard was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice and George went 2-for-5 with a run. Matthew McDonald added a solo home run and Ben MacNaughton went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
Christian Grigsby (2-0) picked up the win, holding HBU scoreless over two innings. Starter Josh Ekness gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
Lamar scored four in the top of the third, but HBU answered back with four in the bottom half on Dumont's two-run single and Trinidad's two-run double.
McDonald's solo homer in the fourth gave the Cardinals the lead for good, then they would score two more in the seventh and eight in the eighth for the split of the twinbill.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday at Husky Field.
