BSB: HBU Can’t Dent UNO’s Early Lead

Huskies starter Tyler Zarella goes seven innings

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans starter Chris Turpin was staked to a first-inning lead, then three-hit HBU the rest of the way as the Privateers claimed a 3-0 win over the Huskies in the Southland Conference series opener Friday night at Maestri Field.
 
Junior first baseman Jake Miller, senior leftfielder Lane Botkin and senior centerfielder Chase Talbot each singled for the Huskies (2-10, 0-1 SLC).
 
Sophomore righthander Tyler Zarella (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Sophomore righthander Morris Austin struck out the side in one inning perfect inning of relief.
 
Kasten Furr went 2-for-4and scored a run, while Gaige Howard went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored a run for the Privateers (6-7, 1-0). Salo Iza and Darren Willis also drove in runs for UNO.
 
Turpin (xxxxx) went the distance, shutting the Huskies out on three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
 
Furr led off the first with a single, then Howard followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Iza later brought Howard home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. Issac Williams led off the second with a single, then scored on Willis' RBI single. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
 
A couple of UNO errors in ninth put two runners on with one out for HBU, but Miller and senior rightfielder Brandon Bena each flied out to end the threat.
 
The series continues with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by Sunday's single game at 1 p.m.
