HOUSTON – HBU will open the 2021 season with a three-game series Saturday through Monday against Rice at Reckling Park. Saturday's and Sunday's games are slated 12:30 first pitch, with Monday's finale scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start. All three games can be heard on KKME Digital Radio with
Russ Reneau.
The Huskies are expected to send sophomore righthander
Tyler Zarella, senior righthander
Jacob Coats and junior lefthander
Austin Spinney to the mound.
HBU returns seven starting position players: junior catcher
Todd Jackson, senior second baseman
Trent Franson, senior shortstop
Nathan Soriano, junior third baseman
Jake Miller, junior leftfielder
Christian Dumont, senior centerfielder
Chase Talbot and senior rightfielder
Brandon Bena. Bena is a Preseason All-Southland Conference selection and was an all-conference second-team pick in 2019.
Rice will counter with righthanders Mitchell Holcomb, Blake Brogdon and Roel Garcia.
Cade Edwards, Bradley Gneiting, Justin Collins and Brayden Combs each started at least 10 games for the Owls during last year's shortened season.
HBU finished last season 6-11, but won four of its last five, while Rice finished 2-14.
