PHOENIX, Arizona – The HBU women's basketball team will remain on the road and participate in the GCU Women's Basketball Classic, a round robin style tournament, beginning Friday on GCU's campus.
The Huskies (3-2) will face off with the Montana Griz (3-1) on Friday before facing the hosts, GCU (2-1), on Saturday.
The Huskies are looking to rebound off of a loss against the New Mexico Lobos, a game which the Huskies struggled to get shots to fall early.
Timia Jefferson is coming off of her first career Southland Player of the Week Honors and led the Huskies in scoring against the Lobos with 15 points.
Marilyn Nzoiwu had the Huskies first double-double of the season against the lobos, scoring 13 points and totaling 13 rebounds.
For the season, Jefferson leads the Huskies in scoring averaging 15.1 points per game.
Julija Vujakovic averages 9.2 points per contest while shooting 44.2 percent from the field and just above 37 percent from deep.
N'Denasija Collins leads HBU in rebounding, collecting 6.8 boards per game while adding 8.4 points in just over 22 minutes per game.
Kennedy Wilson averages seven points per game and leads the Huskies with a .474 field goal percentage.
Enya Maguire adds 7.8 points per game while
Lauryn Mapusua adds 6.4 per game.
The Montana Griz are led by Sammy Fatkin who is averaging 17.3 points per game shooting 53 percent from the floor. Carmen Gfeller is averaging a near double-double with 14 points and 9.5 boards per game. She is shooting a stunning 68 percent from the field. This will be the first time that the Huskies and Griz have faced each other in school history.
The GCU Lopes are led by Dominique Phillips who averages 15.3 pointer per game on 53 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from three point distance. Jay McChristine averages 11 points and 8 rebounds per game and is shooting just under 67 percent from the field. The Huskies and Lopes have met one time prior to this matchup in 2020 when they played a tightly contested game in which the Lopes pulled away late to win 79-76.
Following the GCU Women's Basketball Classic, the Huskies will return home to Houston to host the Texas State Bobcats on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
