HOUSTON - HBU fell behind 3-0 early, but rallied for six runs in the second inning and held off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 11-6, in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior first baseman
Johnny Gonzales went 3-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a hit by pitch, two RBIs and two runs, while senior catcher
Matt Solomon went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs for the Huskies (6-11), who have won four of their last five. Junior centerfielder
Christian Dumont went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, an RBI and three runs and senior second baseman
Trent Franson went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Senior rightfielder
Brandon Bena went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Junior righthander
Dylan Murphy (1-0) earned his first HBU victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
Itchy Burts went 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and run and Drake Osborne went 3-for-5 for the Islanders (8-9). Tristan Welch was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Nate White went 2-for-5 and scored a run. Cole Fluta walked three times and scored twice.
Dom Lopez (2-1) took the loss for TAMU-CC, giving up four runs on one hit with three walks in 1.2 innings.
Burts tripled and scored in the first inning for the Islanders and they scored two more in the second, taking advantage of an HBU throwing error and getting an RBI single from Luke Marbach to take a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies sent 11 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the second, with Solomon getting the scoring started with an RBI double to left and senior shortstop
Nathan Soriano adding a squeeze bunt for an RBI. Franson came through with an RBI single, then Gonzales ripped a two-run triple to right to put HBU ahead, 5-3. Bena capped the rally with an RBI single to right center.
Dumont homered to left, his second of the season, to lead off the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3.
TAMU-CC scored two in the sixth on an RBI single by Burts and another HBU throwing error, to pull within two.
HBU quickly got the runs back as Dumont and Franson led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles and Franson scored on an RBI groundout by Bena.
Solomon launched a monster home run to left in the seventh and senior centerfielder
Chase Talbot drove in a run, reaching on an infield single in the eighth.
The Huskies remain at home, hosting Stephen F. Austin in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
