SAN ANTONIO - HBU rallied for five runs in the third inning and senior righthander
JT Newton was able to keep Incarnate Word at bay for a four-inning save in the Huskies' 8-6 victory in the Southland Conference series finale Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

Brandon Bena went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and scored twice, while senior catcher
Erik Voller went 2-for-5 and scored twice for HBU (13-26, 6-12 SLC). Junior leftfielder
Ryne Edmondson went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run, senior designated hitter
Anthony Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and junior centerfielder
Chase Talbot was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Junior righthander
Kyle Gruller (2-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Newton gave up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings for his fifth save, moving into second all-time with his 16th career save, which is three behind all-time leader Dylan Zarosky.
Eddy Gonzalez went 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring one, while Antonio Valdez went 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Cardinals (25-14, 13-8). Shea Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored and Sean Arnold went 2-for-6 with a run.
Michael Garza (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2.1 innings. Tyler Perez allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief, then Bernie Martinez came in an shut the Huskies out on two hits and struck out six over the final 4.1 innings.
UIW got on the board first when Arnold singled and scored on an Eddy Gonzalez sacrifice fly, but HBU answered in the second when Jones singled and scored on an RBI single by Talbot.
Bena ripped a three-run shot to left, his third of the season, in the third, then Voller followed with a single and Edmondson doubled. Jones had an RBI groundout and Edmondson scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-1.
After the Cardinals scored single run in the third and fourth, the Huskies got them back in the fifth when Bena and Voller led off with back-to-back singles. Bena scored on a passed ball and Voller scored when Talbot struck out, but reached on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 8-3.
Ryan Gonzalez had an RBI triple, then scored on an RBI single by Lee Thomas in the seventh, then Eddy Gonzalez had an RBI groundout in the eighth, cutting HBU's lead to 8-6.
Newton walked Gutierrez with one out in the ninth, then shut the door for the save.
The Huskies return to action when they travel to face UTSA Tuesday at 6 p.m. in San Antonio. There will be no Husky Sports Network broadcast for the game.
