HOUSTON –
Garrett Gibson and
Jemira Thomlinson became the new owners of program records as the HBU track & field teams took part in the 37
th Annual Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University's Ley Track on Friday and Saturday.
Gibson, a freshman, placed second in the 400 meter hurdles finals with a time of 52.95. He broke the previous record of 53.09 held by
Christian Guzman and set in 2015. Thomlinson, meanwhile, surpassed Jade Penick's hammer throw record by more than a foot with a distance of 50.35m/165-2 while placing ninth.
Chantel Ward set a new PR in the event with a toss of 41.70m/136-10.
Thomlinson also set a new PR in the discus throw, recording a top mark of 40.30m/132-3. In the women's javelin,
Christal Dickson placed sixth with a distance of 36.58m/120-0 while
Ana Kriletic took seventh with a top throw of 36.52m/119-10.
On Friday evening, sophomore
Stephen Aguilar finished second in the 10,000 meters with a personal best time of 33:07.25. In the 800 meter finals,
Christos Zachariou posted a time of 1:53.46 and came in eighth while freshman
Travis Jacobs recorded a second place finish in the 800 meters B section with a mark of 1:55.07 with
Cody Hammonds finishing in 1:57.62.
Junior
Denim Rogers took fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles finals, crossing the finish line in 14.49 while in the 100 meter hurdles,
Kaitlin Smith set a new PR with a time of 14.54.
In the men's long jump, freshman
Christopher Welch reached a distance of 7.26m/23-10 to place fifth with
Scott Boon finishing seventh with a distance of 7.09m/23-3.25 and
Michael Anderson coming in just behind Boon with a mark of 7.08m/23-2.75 and placing eighth.
Tay Nance placed sixth on the women's side with a top leap of 5.83m/19-1.50. Nance also earned a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.49m/40-11.75.
Samara Hodges took third place in the women's high jump, clearing 1.67m/5-5.75 on her second attempt at the height.
Iyanu Adeyeye cleared a height of 1.98m/6-6 in the men's high jump to finish fourth.
The Huskies will head to San Marcos, Texas for the Texas State Bobcat Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday, Mar. 29-30.
