HOUSTON - Sam Houston State only had two hits through five innings, but they were both home runs, which proved to be the difference in the Bearkats' 7-4 win over HBU to sweep the Southland Conference baseball series Sunday at Husky Field.
Junior designated hitter
Jordan Blackmon went 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI, while sophomore second baseman
Hayden Baker went 2-for-2 with a double. Senior leftfielder
Anthony Jones went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while junior outfielders
Chase Talbot and
Brandon Bena each drove in a run for the Huskies (4-11, 0-3 SLC).
Junior righthander
Kyle Gruller (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, only two earned, on two hits with five strikeouts and six walks in five innings. Senior
JT Newton allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six over the final four innings.
Gavin Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Diego Davila went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and scored twice for the Bearkats (10-3, 3-0). Jordan Cannon went 1-for-2, walked twice and scored twice and Jack Rogers homered and drove in a pair.
Steven Beard (2-0) picked up the win, retiring both batters he faced after starter Landon Ausley gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings. Nick Mikolajchak earned his second save, shutting out the Huskies on one hit with six strikeouts and a walk over the last 3.2 innings.
The Huskies wrap up their five-game homestand against Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Husky Field.
