HOUSTON – After being held scoreless through six innings, HBU came up with five runs in its final two at-bats to down Northeastern, 5-2, in the non-conference series finale Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior third baseman
Nathan Soriano went 1-for-3, walked and drove in a pair of runs, while senior designated hitter
Anthony Jones went 1-for-4 and also drove in two for HBU (2-1). Junior second baseman
Trent Franson was 2-for-5 and scored a run.
Senior righthander
Brady Batten took a no-decision, allowing two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Junior
Jacob Coats (1-1) picked up the win with one scoreless inning of relief. Senior
JT Newton notched his second save, holding Northeastern scoreless on one hit with four strikeouts over the final two innings.
Michael Geaslen was 1-for-3, driving in both runs for Northeastern (1-2). Corey DiLoreto went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Sean Mellen took a no-decision for Northeastern after shutting out HBU on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings. David Stiehl (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Jared Dupere and Jeff Costello led off the fourth with back-to-back singles for Northeastern, then moved up on Kyle Peterson's sacrifice bunt. Geaslen followed with a two-run single through the right side to stake Northeastern to a 2-0 lead.
With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh, junior leftfielder
Jordan Blackmon singled to left, then stole second, but was injured on the play. Jones plated pinch runner
Hayden Baker with a single to put HBU on the board. Franson singled, then junior centerfielder
Chase Talbot walked to load the bases. Soriano came through by ripping a two-run single to left to put HBU ahead, 3-2.
The Huskies tacked on two more in the eighth, when Northeastern walked the bases loaded, Jones plated a run with a sacrifice fly and junior rightfielder
Brandon Bena scored when Franson reached on an error.
