Avery Cortez scores her fifth goal of the season

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Junior midfielder Avery Cortez notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season but the HBU women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 Southland Conference matchup to Northwestern State on the road at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern State (8-7-1, 5-2-1 SLC) built a 3-0 lead with three goals in the first 36 minutes. Kalle Williams found the net in the 14th minute, followed by Jalen Donaldson in the 27th minute and Kiara Padilla in the 36th. For the Huskies (2-13-0, 1-7-0 SLC), their scoring chances came very early in the first period with Cortez putting an attempt on goal at the 2:16 mark and HBU sending a pair of shots wide in the first 10 minutes.

In the second half, the HBU offense held a 6-1 advantage in shots and it was Cortez who found the net in the 80th minute. The junior took aim from outside the 18 yard box and perfectly placed her shot under the crossbar but outside the reach of NSU goalkeeper Kayla Bomben. Talin Rizo had an attempt saved in the 87th minute as she tried to get the Huskies back within one.

The Lady Demons finished with 10 shots, four of them on goal, while HBU put three of its nine attempts on target.

The Huskies final three regular season matches will all be at home at Sorrels Field beginning this coming Friday, Oct. 25, when they welcome the McNeese Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m.
