Biography

2020-21 (Senior): Started 10 games while appearing in 12…scored two goals, both in SLC play against Central Arkansas(3/5) and at Nicholls (4/3)…finished with one assist, assisting Noor Abukishk on the overtime game-winner against Abilene Christian (3/12)…totaled 838 minutes on the pitch…finished with 19 shot attempts with eight on goal.

2019 (Junior): Appeared in all 18 matches and made 17 starts…led the Huskies in goals and assists…netted seven goals and four assists for a total of 18 points, all career-bests…opened the season with three goals and an assist in HBU’s 5-0 win over Prairie View A&M (8/22) en route to SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors…closed the season on a tear with four goals and three assists in the team’s final six games…had one goal and one assists against UIW (10/11) and had a one goal, two assist performance in the season finale win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11/1)…ranked in the top-10 in the SLC in goals and points, finishing 10th in goals and tied for ninth in points…ended the year third on the team in minutes played at 1,380…put more than half of her 31 shots on goal with 16 on target.

2018 (Sophomore): Started all 19 games and finished with 1,643 minutes played, fifth-most on the team…tied for third on the team with three goals scored…opened the season with a brace, netting her first two career goals in the Huskies’ 3-1 win over Houston (8/17)…also scored a goal at Prairie View A&M (8/31) and was credited with an assist at Nicholls (10/1)…finished the season with seven points (3 goals, 1 assists)…attempted 26 shots on the year with 13 of those on goal.

2017 (Freshman): Cortez played in all 17 games while making six starts, including the final four games of the season...recorded the first assist of her career in the Huskies’ 4-0 win over Nicholls (9/29)...played 938 minutes on the year with a career-high 103 coming against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10/27)…put five of her 13 shots on goal.

High School: Four-year letterwinner and starter at Jersey Village High School for head coach Christie Mestayer…named First Team All-District as a senior…scored 32 goals in the first 11 games of her senior year…played club soccer for the Albion Hurricanes and coach Daniel Hill…served as the team captain in 2017 and helped the club to the national playoffs in 2014.

Personal: Full name is Avery Nicole Cortez…born March 26, 1999 in Houston, Texas…daughter of Christopher Cortez and Tiki Campbell…has one brother, Anthony, and two sisters, Peyton and Riley…majoring in kinesiology.
