WSOC: Huskies Suffer 3-2 Overtime Loss

HBU evens the score while short-handed but falls in overtime

HOUSTON – Trailing 2-1 and down a player the HBU women's soccer team scored an equalizer in the 81st minute to force overtime but UIW scored in the first overtime to edge the Huskies 3-2 on Friday evening at Sorrels Field.

The Cardinals (6-7-0, 5-1-0 SLC) got the scoring started at the 10:02 mark when Brooke Hanson crossed a ball in front of the goal and the Cardinals' Eve Clarkson was there to redirect the pass into the net for a 1-0 UIW advantage. In the 18th minute, HBU (2-11-0, 1-5-0 SLC) junior Avery Cortez dribbled her way through the UIW defense and played an excellent through-ball into the 18-yard box where Jessica Nevils chased it down and with one touch beat the keeper and found the net to even the score at 1-1.The final goal of the first half came in the 28th minute after an HBU foul inside the box sent Keeley Ayala to the spot for a penalty kick which she converted.

In the second half, the Huskies' Xya Balderas and UIW's Annika Fields both drew yellow cards in the 54th minute with Balderas getting shown a red card 15 minutes later and leaving the Huskies down a player. The Huskies found their opportunity to tie the score when Nevils streaked down the right side and played the ball into the box where a handball set up the Huskies for a PK with less than 10 minutes to play. Cortez converted from the spot and brought it to 2-2. HBU goalkeeper Ashtyn Franks came up with four saves over the final nine minutes to keep things tied and send the game to overtime.

In the golden goal first overtime, the Huskies had the first two attempts in the first three minutes but UIW found the goal at the 93:03 mark with Ayala knocking in a Hanson cross for the game-winner.

Cortez's goal and assist give her four goals for the year and two assists. For Nevils, the goal was her third of the year. UIW held a 26-9 advantage in shots.

HBU will hit the road for its final road trip of the season next weekend with the Huskies traveling to Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas on Friday, Oct. 18, and Northwestern State on Sunday, Oct. 20.
