COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A pair of school records fell as the HBU track and field team opened the 2019 indoor track season at the Texas A&M Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Junior
Chantel Ward smashed the previous shot put record, held by teammate
Imani Jacquet and set at Last year's Southland Conference Championships, by more than two feet with a distance of 13.70m/44-11.5. Ward placed fourth in the event for the Huskies.
Christopher Welch, a freshman competing in his first-ever collegiate meet, leapt 15.20m/49-10.5 on his first attempt in the triple jump to set a new school record in the event and place second at the meet. The previous school record of 14.73m/48-4.0 was held by current Husky
Augusto Miro-Quesada and
Austin Williams.
In the women's mile, newcomer
Jessica Rabius earned a third-place finish with a time of 5:18.31 while
Taylor Hill posted the 12
th-best time in the 60 meter dash, crossing in 7.77. Hill, a senior, also posted a personal-best time of 25.79 in the 200 meter dash.
In women's field events, senior
Tay Nance posted a third-place finish in the triple jump with a top leap of 12.18m/39-11.5 while also setting a new PR in the long jump, posting a top distance of 5.54m/18-2.25 and finishing ninth. Jacquet, a junior, posted a sixth-place showing in the weight throw with a distance of 16.24m/53-3.5.
Junior
Denim Rogers, in his first meet with the Huskies, posted the sixth-fastest time in the 60 meter hurdles prelims, 8.32, to qualify for the finals but failed to post a time in the finals due to a disqualification.
Von Beaudoin took 12
th in the long jump with a distance of 6.75m/22-1.75 and the men's distance medley relay team placed fourth, finishing in 10:33.98.
The Huskies will be back in action in two weeks as they head across town to the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse for the Houston Invitational on Friday, Jan. 25, and Saturday, Jan. 26.
