BSB: Northwestern State Edges HBU in 10 Innings, 4-3

Junior righthander Zach Carter strikes out career-high 12

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – HBU left 12 runners on base, including eight in scoring position, as Northwestern State rallied for a 4-3 victory in 10 innings in the Southland Conference series opener Friday night at Brown-Stroud Field.

Junior righthander Zach Carter took a no-decision for HBU (20-22, 12-7 SLC), allowing three runs on three hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts, two walks and four hit batters. Junior JT Newton (2-5) took the loss allowing one run in one-third of an inning.

Senior rightfielder Matt Heck went 4-for-5 with a double, while senior shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson went 2-for-5 with a double. Heck extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by a Husky this season.

Jose Vasquez (5-0) picked up the win, recording the final two outs in the 10th for NWST (24-18, 10-9). Starter Ridge Heisler allowed two runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and one walks in 7.2 innings.

Tyler Smith went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for the Demons, while David Fry went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored twice.

The Huskies got on the board first, scoring twice in the second on RBI singles by sophomore third baseman Elijah Simon and senior second baseman Jack Fitzgerald. Junior centerfielder Jonathan Ducoff singled and scored in the inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Fry led off the fourth with a solo home run to leftcenter to cut HBU's lead in half.

In the eighth, Carter hit Sam Taylor and Fry with pitches, then Smith delivered a two-out, two-run triple, which landed in Heck's glove on a diving attempt, but was jarred loose when he hit the ground, to give the Demons a 3-2 lead.

In the ninth, junior Jake Scott pinch hit, drew a walk and went to second on a wild pitch, then Halloran came through with a two-out RBI single to right to tie the game.

Kwan Adkins singled in the ninth, then Smith doubled to right to plate the winning run.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday.
