HOUSTON – HBU senior lefthander
Matthew McCollough struck out a career-high 12 as the Huskies claimed a 5-2 victory over Lamar in the second game of the Southland Conference baseball series Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
McCollough (3-1) allowed one run on six hits and walked a pair in eight innings, throwing 112 pitches for the Huskies (11-16, 5-3 SLC). He also took over 11
th place in HBU history with his 17
th career win.
Senior rightfielder
Matt Heck went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and scored a run, while junior designated hitter
Jake Scott went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Senior third baseman
Spencer Halloran doubled, drove in two runs and scored, while junior second baseman
Derek Reilly doubled and scored twice.
Noah Sills (2-4) took the loss for Lamar (5-22, 1-10), giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings.
Grant DeVore went 2-for-5 with a double and drove in both runs for the Cardinals. Philip Ingram went 2-for-4 and Cole Coker went 2-for-5.
The Cardinals got on the board first, when Chad McKinney walked and DeVore doubled off the base off the wall in left in the third inning.
Reilly led off the fourth with a double, then
Matt Heck doubled down the leftfield line to tie the game. Scott delivered with a two-out RBI single to put the Huskies ahead.
The Huskies struck for three more in the fifth, when junior leftfielder
Anthony Jones singled and Reilly drew a walk. Halloran doubled down the rightfield line, plating both runners, then Heck reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to extend HBU's lead to 5-1.
Junior righthander
JT Newton walked Cole Secrest to lead off the ninth, then Newton's errant throw to second on Chase Whetsel's chopper put runners on first and second with no outs. Cole Girouard flied out, then McKinney popped up to short for the second out. Ingram walked to load the bases, then DeVore singled to left to cut the deficit to 5-2, before Coker grounder resulted in a force out at second to end the game.
