HOUSTON – Rice righthander Matt Canterino held HBU in check and the Owls touched up the Huskies' bullpen for seven runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away for a 10-2 victory in the non-conference baseball series opener Friday night at Reckling Park.
Senior leftfielder
Spencer Halloran went 2-for-5 for the Huskies (3-7) to extend his hitting streak to seven games, while senior shortstop
Tyler Depreta-Johnson and junior outfielder
Anthony Jones each singled and drove in a run.
Junior righthander
Zach Carter (0-2) took the loss for HBU, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings. The Huskies bullpen allowed seven runs over the final three innings.
Chace Sarchet went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, drove in five and scored twice, while Ford Proctorr went 2-for-3 with a double, drove in a run and scored twice for the Owls (4-5). Braden Comeaux, Trei Cruz and Justin Collins each had two hits and drove in a run, while Ryan Chandler went 2-for-5 and scored a run.
Canterino held HBU scoreless on two hits, struck out 12 and walked one in seven innings.
Proctor delivered an RBI double to deep center in the third, then a Sarchet sacrifice fly gave the Owls a 2-0 lead. Rice broke the game open with a five-run seventh, which included a three-run homer to right Sarchet.
Depreta-Johnson came through with an RBI single in the eighth and Jones had an RBI single in the ninth for HBU.
