ABILENE, Texas – HBU women's soccer will begin its quest for its third Southland Conference championship in four years on Friday when the Huskies face Abilene Christian on the road at Elmer Gray Stadium on Friday, Sep. 15, at 5:00 p.m.
The Huskies (1-3-1) are coming off an unbeaten weekend in which they tied UT Rio Grande Valley at home, 1-1, last Friday before shutting out Grand Canyon, 2-0, on Sunday. HBU's three goals in the matches came from junior
Gabby Rodriguez, who netted header goals in each, and senior
Ellee Hall. Hall and Rodriguez have accounted for all five Husky goals this season, with Hall recording three and Rodriguez two. Hall's three goals are tied for second-most in the Southland.
Jennifer Gebhardt,
Baylii Bieke,
Casey Basso and
Megan Rickert have been the foundation of the Huskies defense, all totaling at least 445 minutes played already through just five matches. Junior
Alanis Guevara has spent a majority of the minutes in goal, recording 27 saves in four matches. Senior
Katie Turner earned the shutout win over Grand Canyon, making eight saves.
Abilene Christian (2-5) has faced a tough non-conference schedule with matches against Baylor, North Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma State. The Wildcats dropped their only home match thus far to North Texas, 2-0.
Junior Dylan Owens leads the Wildcats with three goals, including both of their game-winners. Shay Johnson and Mary Moore have both scored two. Erin Smith, a freshman, has been ACU's primary keeper so far. In five starts, Smith is 1-4 with a 3.17 goals against average.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series between the two teams, 3-1, with HBU's lone win in the series coming at Sorrels Field in 2014 in the form of a 1-0 overtime victory.
HBU will have a week between matches, traveling to Nacogdoches on Friday, Sep. 22 to face SFA at 7:00 p.m. and then Huntsville on Sunday, Sep. 24, to take on Sam Houston State at 1:00 p.m.
