WGOLF: Five Huskies Named WGCA All-American Scholars

HBU leads Southland Conference members in total honorees, ranks first amongst all Texas schools.

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – HBU women's golfers Charlotte Hartshorn, Giorgia Carletti, Lexi Brooks, Kaity Cummings and Alisa Chong were named Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars for the 2016-17 season, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
All five Huskies earned the distinguished academic honor after posting above the required 3.50 cumulative GPA, as a total of 952 women's collegiate golfers were recognized nationwide.
 
HBU led all Southland Conference members in total selections and ranked first among all programs in the state of Texas, improving on their second-place finish for the 2015-16 season, when they finished in second to Baylor.
 
Senior Hartshorn grabbed her third consecutive honor from the WGCA, posting a 3.88 GPA in kinesiology. The native of Nuneaton, England, finished fourth on the team with a 78.21 scoring average, and was a participant in both the Huskies' 2017 Southland Conference Championship title, successfully winning an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in May.
 
Junior Carletti and sophomore Cummings both received their second consecutive honor, posting a 3.79 and 3.63, respectively. Carletti, a native of Milano, Italy, finished sixth on the team for the season, recording a 79.85 scoring average including two top-20 finishes.
 
Cummings, native of Waco, Texas, finished second on the team in scoring average for her second back-to-back year, recording a 76.00 average including three top-five and four top-ten finished. Cummings was also part of the conference-winning team that travelled to the NCAA Regional tournament.
 
Sophomore Brooks picked up her first scholarly honor from the WGCA. Brooks, the 2017 Southland Conference Championship Medalist posted a 3.55 GPA in nursing, and finished first on the team with a 75.48 scoring average, including three top-three and six top-ten finishes. The Kingwood, Texas, native posted the new Southland Conference Championship record with a three-round total of 3-under par 210 during her success at the championship, leading her team to a one-stroke victory over UCA and a trip to the NCAA Regional event.
 
Freshman Chong also received her first WGCA award, recording a 3.58 GPA in kinesiology. Chong recorded a 77.25 stroke average over twenty rounds, finishing third on the team in scoring average. Chong only participated during the spring semester however was a key component of the Huskies' success, recording one top-five, one top-ten and four top-twenty finishes, including a third-place finish at the conference championship.
 
Hartshorn, Carletti, Cummings, Brooks and Chong were all named to the SLC Commissioner's 2017 Spring Academic Honor Roll, along with teammates Caylee Senn and Alexis Kollmansberger. Academic requirements for the honor roll differ from the WGCA, as it recognizes student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA for the semester in which their sports' championship is held.

The Women's Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents nearly 600 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
