BLACKSBURG, Va. – HBU went toe-to-toe with Virginia Tech and led by five with five minutes to go in the first half but the Hokies shot over 70 percent in the second half to pull away and defeat the Huskies by a score of 99-73 on Tuesday evening at Cassell Coliseum in HBU's final game in the 2K Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
HBU (1-4) had four players reach double-figures scoring led by freshman
Ian DuBose. DuBose was 6-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The freshman added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Josh Ibarra ended the night with 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds while
David Caraher had 12 points.
Braxton Bonds filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds while senior
Will Gates Jr. was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field with nine points.
Virginia Tech (4-1) got out to an early 15-10 lead a little over five minutes in but a three from DuBose and a put-back layup by Bonds tied the game up at 15-15. Less than five minutes later, another DuBose three put the Huskies ahead 22-20. The Hokies went on a little run to ahead 27-24 but HBU responded with threes by DuBose and Caraher and an Ibarra jumper with 5:40 on the clock gave HBU a 32-27 lead. With 2:52 left in the half, HBU led by two but Virginia Tech was able to close the half with a 10-2 run to lead 44-38 at the half.
The Hokies got a basket from Justin Bibbs to open the second half but an Ibarra bucket and a Gates Jr. three cut it to three with 18:46 mark. Virginia Tech went on a 36-12 run over the next 11:26 to lead by 26 with 7:20 remaining.
HBU shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the floor while Virginia Tech knocked down 64 percent (32-of-50), including 70.8 percent (17-of-24) in the second half. The Hokies were 16-of-26 from three-point range and made 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) in the second half. HBU won the turnover battle, forcing VT into 15 while committing 13. The Hokies held a 32-27 advantage on the boards with 12 of HBU's 27 coming on the offensive end.
HBU stays on the road for its next game, traveling to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State on Sunday, Nov. 26, afternoon with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
