Andrew Alvarez delivered an RBI single in the to of the 13
th inning to give the Huskies a one-run lead, but second-ranked Texas A&M answered with two runs in the bottom half for a 3-2 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday at Blue Bell Park.
Alvarez went 3-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to nine game to open the season and his reaching safely streak to 19 games dating back to last season. Junior rightfielder
Brandon Brintz went 2-for-3 with a pair of sacrifice bunts for the Huskies (5-4), while senior shortstop
Louie Payetta went 2-for-5 with a walk and a run. Junior catcher
Blake Thomas added a pair of hits, and senior second baseman
Greg Espinosa drove in the other run.
Senior lefthander
Matthew McCollough took a no-decision, allowing one run on 10 hits with four strikeouts in eight innings. McCollough moved up three spots to 11
th on HBU's all-time strikeout list. Senior
Dylan Zarosky held the Aggies (8-1) hitless over three innings with a pair of strikeouts, while senior
Matt Harding (1-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits with three walks, two intentional, in 1.2 innings.
Boomer White went 3-for-6 with a run, while Hunter Melton went 2-for-6 with a triple and an RBI for Texas A&M. Nick Choruby also had an RBI for the Aggies.
Cason Sherrod (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching just one-third of an inning. Texas A&M starter Brigham Hill allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings, and the Aggies used eight pitchers on the night.
The Huskies struck first in the fifth inning when junior leftfielder
Christian Thames singled, then junior centerfielder
Joe Van Marter singled with two outs. Espinosa hit a sharp grounder to the right side that kicked off Melton's glove into rightfield, allowing Thames to score and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Cole Bedford doubled in the bottom of the seventh, then scored on an error. Choruby's single made the run earned.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until Payetta singled to lead off the 13
th. Brintz laid down a sacrifice bunt, but pinch hitter
Austin Zillweger struck out for the second out. Alvarez then went the other way to right and Payetta scored to put the Huskies ahead, 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning, Moss singled, then scored the tying run on Melton's triple down the rightfield line. After a pair of intentional walks load the bases with one out, George Janca popped up to short for the second out. Choruby then drew a walk to plate the winning run.
The Huskies return to action and return home for a five-game homestand, beginning with a four-game series against Utah Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. Friday's single game begins at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m., then a single game Sunday at 2 p.m. The Legacy Sports Network video and audio broadcasts with
