Greg Espinosa laid a perfect bunt down the third baseline, then Utah pitcher Dylan Drachler's throw sailed wide of first allowing the Huskies to plate the winning run for a 2-1 victory in the series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior third baseman
Justin Monsour doubled, walked and scored both of the Huskies' runs. Junior rightfielder
Brandon Brintz went 2-for-3 with a walk. HBU (6-4) did not have an RBI, as Monsour scored on a wild pitch and an error.
Kody Davis went 2-for-5 with a run, while Dallas Carroll went 2-for-5 with a triple for Utah (2-7). Kellen Marruffo drove in the Utes' run with a double.
Senior
Dylan Zarosky (1-1) earned the win for HBU, holding Utah scoreless on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk in 1.2 innings. Junior righthander
Addison Russ turned in another outstanding performance, giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in eight innings for a no-decision.
Drachler (0-2) took the loss for the Utes, allowing an unearned run on one hit with four walks in two innings. Starter Jayson Rose gave up one run on five hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.
Davis singled through the left side with one out in the first, then scored on Marruffo's double to left to put Utah ahead, 1-0.
Monsour led off the third with a double, went to third on junior centerfielder
Joe Van Marter's groundout, then scored on a Rose wild pitch to tie the game at one apiece.
Neither team would crack the scoreboard over the next six innings, even though Utah loaded the bases in the ninth and HBU had runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom half.
Monsour led off the bottom of the 10
th with a walk, then Van Marter was hit by a pitch. Espinosa's bunt single, followed by Drachler's errant throw, allowed the Huskies to walk off winners in their second-straight extra-inning game.
