Carlos Arias finished with a time of 15:44.51 to win the individual title in the men's 5k race Thursday afternoon in the Season Opener at MacGregor Park. The men finished second out of four teams, while the women – led by
Gabriela Busquet's seventh-place finish – placed third.
Arias, a transfer from UT Arlington who ran today's race unattached, became the first men's runner since Matt Perri in 2013 to win a race, as he beat Sam Houston State's Jeffrey Moore by more than six seconds. Houston, which won the team championship with 28 points, had runners place third and fourth to lead the way.
Jeremy Lewis finished sixth with a time of 16:04.31, while
Oscar Garcia was the third Husky to finish in the Top 10 with an eighth-place finish with a 16:08.25 clocking.
Orlando Garcia finished 14th (16:36.91), followed by
Daniel Shelton (17th; 16:48.51), and
Enrique Perez (21st; 17:14.32).
Juan Fraga ran unattached and placed seventh with a time of 16:07.07.
On the women's side, Busquet led the Huskies with a Top-10 finish with a time of 12:39.
Lauren Stockton placed 11th with a 13.04 clocking, nine seconds faster than teammate
Arielle Price, who finished 13th.
Katie Haring (17th; 13.33) and
Brielle Eskridge (19th; 14.01) rounded out the Huskies. Houston won the women's team with a score of 23 points, sweeping the awards for the day.
HBU competes in the Rice Invitational Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 pm from the Rice Intramural Fields.
