Day 1 ResultsHAMMOND, La. -- Leaving her teammates and fans transfixed on her sixth and final attempt of the day,
Taylor Thomas again came through in a big way Friday, smashing the HBU record and claiming silver in the women's long jump on the opening day of the Southland Conference Track & Field Championships at Southeastern Louisiana.
Thomas, who won the SLC indoor title on her last jump in February, uncorked a 5.97m/19-7 jump in the last round to finish as runner-up and score the Huskies' first points of the meet. Freshman
Michelle Linton was oh-so-close to scoring, finishing ninth with a season-best 5.75m/18-10.5, and
Desiree Scott was 13th.
After the first five events of the decathlon,
Garrison Fick holds a narrow lead with 3,580 points in his debut at the ten-eventer. Fick, sixth in the heptathlon at the SLC indoors, had a personal best in the shot put before running the fastest 400 of his life at 49.02 to close out the day eight points up on Tanner Owens of Northwestern State.
Three seniors competed for the final time in the orange and blue, led by
Chinnoya Adiukwu's 10th-place finish in the women's javelin.
Valerie Abadom had a lifetime best in the women's hammer and finished just behind teammate
Erin Buck. In the men's long jump,
Brice Christian had a best of 6.67m/21-10.75 to take 16th.
Action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the decathlon 110 hurdles. Running event prelims start at 2 p.m. with the 1500, and the men's triple jump opens the field events at 3 p.m.
