Taylor Thomas matched the best-ever finish by an HBU athlete at the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet, leaping 5.93m/19-5.5 Thursday to take 29th overall in the women's long jump on the first day of competition at the University of Texas.
Thomas had a foul on her first attempt before recording a 5.57m/18-3.25 effort in round two, and she uncorked her second best jump ever in the third and final round to tie the 29th-place finish by Brittane Gaines in the 100 meters in 2012. She entered the meet ranked 45th in the West and improved her position by 16 places. The top 12 placers advance to the NCAA Championships at Eugene, Ore.
Freshman Daniel Shelton also improved five spots on his pre-meet ranking with a 1:52.64 for 43rd overall in the 800. The Southland Conference silver medalist finished sixth in his heat as the first frosh from HBU to qualify for the postseason since the Huskies became eligible in 2012.
Day two of the West Preliminary Round running events get under way at 5 p.m. Friday with the women's 100 hurdles, and sophomore
Christian Guzman will make his NCAA debut at 5:30 in the men's 110 hurdles. Guzman is slated to run in lane eight in heat four. The top three finishers in each of six heats, and the next six fastest times will advance to the quarterfinals, to be held Saturday.
