Christian Guzman blasted his own school record in the 110 hurdles Sunday, clocking 14.19 to finish second at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Last Chance meet and earn a berth in the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Guzman is tied for 37th in the West rankings, and the top 48 declared athletes will compete in Austin next week for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Running with a 1.6 meter-per-second tail wind, Guzman chopped a quarter-second off his existing HBU record of 14.44 and became only the second Husky male athlete ever to qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Round.
Matt Perri was a qualifier in the 3000 steeplechase in 2013.
Southland Conference silver medalists
Kierstin Santana and
Taylor Thomas finished second in their specialties, with Santana just missing her school record in the 800 at 2:10.75. Thomas, who will likely be an NCAA Preliminary Round qualifier, long jumped a wind-aided 5.79m/19-0. In the men's 800, freshman
Daniel Shelton was fourth in his section and fifth overall at 1:52.70.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round is on May 28-30 at the University of Texas in Austin. Women's long jump qualifying is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, and the first round of the men's 110 hurdles is scheduled for Friday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m. Guzman and Thomas will learn on Thursday, May 21, if they have been formally accepted into the NCAA meet.
