HAMMOND, La. -- Kierstin Santana and Daniel Shelton won silvers in the 800 and school records fell in the 4x400 Sunday on the final day of the Southland Conference Track & Field Championships at Southeastern Louisiana. HBU ended up ninth in the women's team standings with 36 points, three better than last year, and the men were a much-improved 10th with 26 points, double last year's total. Stephen F. Austin swept the team titles.

Santana controlled the women's two-lapper from early in the race, staying in or near the lead all the way to the finish, where she was outleaned by a fast-closing DeJernel Jordan of SFA. Santana's time of 2:10.10 chopped almost a second off her own HBU record, and was only .14 behind Jordan.

The men's race was similar, with freshman Shelton taking control of the race over the first 200 and fighting to keep the lead until the final stretch, where Michael Batson of New Orleans pulled away and Shelton clocked 1:52.15 for second.

Running with two freshmen and two sophomores, the women's 4x400 broke a five-year-old school record and ended up on the podium with their 3:45.69 to claim bronze. Santana played a big part in the medal-winning performance, turning in a 56.3 second leg to keep the Huskies in contention. Freshman Ericka Rodriguez led off with a 57.0, while fellow frosh Gbemisola Orundami split 56.3 on the third leg before Ashley Johnson anchored in 56.1.

Not to be outdone, the men's squad of Jordan Claypool (47.8), David Hicks (47.8), D'Anthony Graham (49.3) and Brice Christian (47.7) smashed the existing school record with a 3:12.57 that earned them the win in their heat and sixth place overall. The same foursome came close to breaking the HBU 4x100 record earlier in the day, speeding to a 41.40 to win their section and place seventh overall.

Matching his feat from his freshman year in 2014, Christian Guzman scored in both hurdle events, taking fourth in the 110H by .01 in 14.39, his fastest time ever, and eighth in the 400H at 53.50. Graduate student Jaivairia Bacote, an NCAA Division II All-America at St. Augustine's previously, capped off her brief Husky career with a 61.37 to take fourth in the 400H.

Freshman Tambrisha Banks picked up valuable points in the 100 and 200, finishing eighth in the short dash at 11.87 and sixth in the furlong at 24.53. Other points Sunday came from Jeremy Lewis, who used a powerful kick over the final 100 to place seventh in the 1500 at 3:57.11, and the women's 4x100 quartet of Bacote, Banks, Imani Carr and Lakesha Cameron.

Field event action saw freshman Briana O'Brien throw a lifetime-best 39.21m/128-8 to place 11th in the discus, and Renee Gentle tied her season best in the high jump with a 1.61m/5-3.25 clearance.

The Huskies will now wait for the announcement of the fields for the NCAA West First Round meet at the end of May, which will come after next weekend's final regular-season meets. Long jumper Taylor Thomas is currently the highest-ranked HBU athlete in the West at 40th, which would earn her a spot as the top 48 declared athletes in each event will compete.
