Michelle Chukwujekwu took down one of the oldest women's records on the books and
Christian Guzman bettered his own HBU record in the 110 hurdles to lead the Huskies Saturday at the storm-shortened Baylor Michael Johnson Classic. Meet officials ended the meet after the 400 hurdles due to a giant storm cell that hit the Waco area just before 8 p.m.
Chukwujekwu, a transfer from Southwest Baptist who was sixth at the Southland Conference indoor championships in February, triple jumped 11.67m/38-3.5 to break the previous record of 11.51m/37-9.25, set in 2009 by Toni Dickerson. Guzman clocked 14.44 to trim .07 off the mark he set at last year's SLC outdoor championships and maintain his No. 2 conference ranking.
Freshmen turned in the highest placings on the day, led by
Daniel Shelton's 1:51.54 for sixth in the 800.
Tambrisha Banks zipped to a pair of lifetime bests in the sprints, moving to No. 4 in the SLC in the 200 with her seventh-place 24.23 after an 11.90 in the 100.
In the women's 800,
Kierstin Santana won her heat and placed ninth overall with a season-best 2:11.63, just missing her school record, and SLC indoor long jump champion
Taylor Thomas was eighth in a deep field featuring Big 12 and B1G athletes, spanning 5.68m/18-7.75 on her second attempt.
Befitting a meet named after the greatest 400-meter runner in history, three Huskies rolled to impressive finishes in the one-lapper.
Brice Christian ran his fastest time since 2012 with a 48.39, while fellow senior
David Hicks set a personal best of 48.74.
Ashley Johnson continued her return from injury with a 56.58 to climb to No. 7 in the SLC rankings.
Both 4x100 squads ran season bests, with the men's quartet of
Jordan Claypool,
D'Anthony Graham, Hicks and Christian placing seventh at 41.71. The Huskies finished at 46.44 in the women's race with
Imani Carr, Banks,
Jazmine Warden and
Lakesha Cameron. Carr added PRs in the 100 and 200, and Claypool dropped under 22 seconds with a 21.97 lifetime best in the furlong.
Other season bests included a 1.90m/6-2.75 for
Garrison Fick in the high jump and a 42.39m/139-1 toss in the hammer throw for
Erin Buck. Fick added a PR 22.00 in the 200, and
Valerie Abadom (38.61m/126-8 hammer) and freshman
Briana O'Brien (38.38m/125-11 discus) also had 2015 bests. In the early sections of the men's 800,
Cody Hammonds raced to a 1:53.09 PR, while
Jarell McFarland lowered his PR in the 400 hurdles to 54.81.
Beating the steamy mid-day heat,
Carolyn McClanahan ran a season best 11:34.16 in the 3000 steeplechase and
Oscar Garcia notched a '15 best of 15:33.75 in the 5000.
The Huskies travel across town April 25 for the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet.
