McKINNEY, Texas – The HBU women's golf team carded an eight-over 296 in the third and final round to claim third place in the 14th annual Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday.
The Huskies (312-304-296), for a second straight day, cut eight strokes off their previous outing to shoot the second lowest round of the tournament on the par 72, 6,262-yard Hill Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. HBU finished with a 48-over 912 team score in the 54-hole tournament.
Huskies Giorgia Carletti (79-74-74 – 227), Caitlyn Cassity (76-81-71 – 228) and Aries Ramirez (82-75-72 – 229) all finished within two strokes of each other in the 40-player field. Carletti turned in a two-over 74 in her final round to capture the program's first top-10 placing at the Southland Championship with a share of eight place at 11-over.
Cassity claimed a share of 11th at 228 (+12) after firing a one-under 71 on her third turn of the course, the lowest individual round by a Husky, while Ramirez scored par to tie for 13th at 229 (+13). Ramirez recorded the team's lone eagle, doing so on hole three.
Senior Rachel Mulkey (78-74-79 – 231) finished two strokes back of Ramirez, taking a 79 in her final round to claim 18th at 15-over.
Sophomore Charlotte Hartshorn (79-83-83 – 245) shot an 83 to finish 34th and round out the HBU scorecard.
Lamar won the conference title with an 892 team score, followed by Central Arkansas (901), HBU, Stephen F. Austin (917), Sam Houston State (919), McNeese State (920), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (948) and Incarnate Word (978).
The third-place finish caps off the program's second year as a member of the Southland. The Huskies improved four spots from the team's 2014 tournament finish. HBU ends the season with a 301.12 stroke average, placing in the top five in all 10 tournaments, including six top-three finishes and two titles. Individually, the Huskies finished inside the top 20 a total of 31 times, with 16 top-10 finishes and five in the top five.
