Kierstin Santana won the 400 meters and helped HBU to victory in the 4x400, and
Shawn O'Brien crushed his own school record in the javelin Saturday to lead the Huskies to 11 event wins at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Dash. HBU's women swept dual meets with the hosts and UT-Pan American, while the men beat UTPA and narrowly lost to the Islanders.
Santana dropped down in distance from her usual 800-meters and closed strongly to win in 57.42 ahead of teammates
Jazmine Warden and
Ashley Johnson. She also ran second leg on the quartet that clocked 3:52.68 to win the long relay by more than 11 seconds.
Adding more than 10 feet to the record he set earlier in the season, O'Brien's opening throw of 51.26m/168-3 won by almost 44 feet.
Roneisha Webb led a sweep of the hurdles races with a lifetime-best 63.35 in the women's 400H, as
Jarell McFarland took the men's race at 54.97.
Desiree Scott dashed to gold in the women's 100H, and
Christian Guzman matched his 2015 best of 14.63 to win the men's 110H.
Freshman
Tambrisha Banks was another double winner, notching a season-best 12.04 in the 100 and teaming up with Warden,
Imani Carr and
Lakesha Cameron to take the 4x100 title at 47.57. Field event gold went to Southland Conference indoor champion
Taylor Thomas, who sailed to 5.77m/18-11.25 on her second attempt to win the long jump.
The other win for the Huskies came in the men's 4x400, where
Brice Christian,
Cody Hammonds,
David Hicks and
D'Anthony Graham put together a 3:18.82 to win by more than two seconds. Hicks earlier raced to a personal-best 21.68 in the 200 to take third.
HBU heads to Waco on April 18 for the Baylor Invitational.
