Photo GalleryHOUSTON – Iowa jumped out to an early lead and took advantage of four HBU errors to claim the series finale, 7-2, and earn a split in the four-game non-conference baseball series Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior third baseman
Curtis Jones was 2-for-4 for the Huskies (9-11), while junior leftfielder
Austin Saenz and senior rightfielder
Thomas Clay each doubled.
Jake Mangler was 2-for-5 with a double and drove in two for the Hawkeyes (12-4), while Nick Roscetti was 2-for-4 with a double, drove in a run and scored one. Eric Toole was 2-for-4 and scored, while Eric Schenck-Joblinske walked twice and scored twice.
Nick Allgeyer (2-0) picked up the win for Iowa, throwing two innings of relief, while junior
Brody Toal (0-2) took the loss for HBU. Each team used six pitchers.
Toole led off the game for Iowa with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on a dropped fly ball, which allowed Kris Goodman to go all the way to third. Goodman scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.
The Hawkeyes added three more in the second, as Sean Moore led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Roscetti added an RBI double and Mangler had an RBI infield single to put Iowa ahead, 5-0.
HBU scored in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by junior second baseman
Justin Monsour and again in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Alvarez.
The Huskies return to Southland Conference play when they host first-place Central Arkansas in a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
