HOUSTON – Sam Houston State overcame a one-run deficit with a four-run rally in the sixth for an 8-4 victory over HBU to sweep the Southland Conference series Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior second baseman
Josh Martinez went 3-for-4 for the Huskies (22-26, 11-16 SLC), while junior rightfielder
Thomas Clay went 2-for-4 and scored a run to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Junior pitcher
Curtis Jones went 2-for-5 and scored a run, while junior catcher
Samm Wiggins went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis singled, walked, drove in a run and scored once.
Hayden Simerly went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Colt Atwood went 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Bearkats (37-14, 19-8). Corey Toups went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Luke Plucheck came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and two runs, and Shea Pierce doubled and drove in a couple.
Andrew Godail (3-0) pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing a run on five hits, to pick up the win for SHSU, while Ryan Brinley earned his eighth save, pitching the final 1.1 innings, striking out two and giving up a pair of hits.
Jones (4-4) took the loss for HBU, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and striking out four in five innings. Sophomore
Matthew McCollough pitched two perfect innings of relief, as he, Martinez, and sophomore
Dylan Zarosky combined to strike out five and hold SHSU to one run on three hits over the final four innings.
The Huskies conclude the regular season by hosting Stephen F. Austin Thursday through Saturday at Husky Field. HBU will honor its seven seniors on Senior Day Saturday.
