Baseball Splits DH at SE Louisiana

Huskies junior 2B Josh Martinez reaches safely 9 times, going 7-for-8 with five runs.



HAMMOND, La. – HBU junior second baseman Josh Martinez reached base safely nine times, going 4-for-5 in the first game and 3-for-3 with a pair of walks in the second, as the Huskies split a Southland Conference doubleheader with Southeastern Louisiana Saturday at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
 
After the Huskies (13-10, 4-4 SLC) dropped the first game, 13-6, HBU senior righthander Ryan Lower shut down the Lions (16-10, 5-3) for a 6-0 win in the second game. Lower scattered five hits and struck out two over eight innings, then senior Kobie Hajdik finished the shutout by working the ninth.
 
Martinez scored three times, while junior designated hitter Samm Wiggins went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a run and a stolen base for HBU. Senior shortstop CJ Jarvis was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk and a run.
 
Five different players had hits for SELA, with a double by Sam Roberson the only one for extra bases. Tate Scioneaux (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 6.1 innings.
 
HBU took a 2-0 lead in the third, when junior rightfielder Thomas Clay led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jarvis. Martinez, Jones and senior first baseman Bradley Brown followed with consecutive singles, with Jones and Brown driving in the runs.
 
Wiggins singled and scored on senior leftfielder Jordan McCoy's RBI double to left in the sixth. In the seventh, Jarvis led off with a double to right, Martinez walked and Jones moved them up with a bunt. After Brown struck out for the second out, junior centerfielder Zach Nehrir walked to load the bases, then Wiggins came through with a two runs single to extend the Huskies' lead to 5-0.
 
Martinez led off the ninth with a single and came home on another RBI single by Wiggins to make the score 6-0.
 
In the first game, Martinez and Jones each went 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs for the Huskies. Brown was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
 
Andrew Godbold was 2-for-3 with a grand slam, six RBIs and two runs for the Lions, while Kennon Menard was 2-for-3, drove in two and scored one. Roberson scored three times and drove in a run, while Jacob Williams and Jameson Fisher both scored twice.
 
Andro Cutura (4-1) picked up the win for SELA, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and striking out seven in six innings. Junior Taylor Wright (2-4) took the loss for HBU, giving up seven runs, six earned, on six hits with a strikeout and three walks in 5.1 innings.
 
The Huskies took an early lead with two runs in the first went Martinez, Jones and Brown had back-to-back-to-back singles, but the Lions took advantage of an error to score a run in the bottom of the second. HBU extended its lead to 4-1 on Jarvis's RBI double in the fourth and Brown's RBI double in the fifth.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Williams led off with a walk, Roberson was hit by a pitch and Fisher singled to load the bases. Godbold then delivered a grand slam to left to put SELA ahead, 5-4.
 
HBU tied it in the top of the sixth when senior designated hitter Mike Chamberlain walked and later scored on a wild pitch, but SELA answered with six runs in the bottom half and went on to a 13-6 victory in the series opener.
 
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
