HOUSTON – All nine starters hit safely as HBU pounded out a season-high 20 hits and stole five bases to cruise past Prairie View A&M, 12-4, in the final tuneup before Southland Conference play Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior first baseman
Bradley Brown went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs for HBU (8-5), while junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir also doubled twice, drove in a run and scored a pair. Senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, and junior catcher
Samm Wiggins went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Junior rightfielder
Thomas Clay, senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis, and junior second baseman
Josh Martinez each had two hits, with Jarvis and Martinez each driving in two apiece.
Sophomore
Matt Harding (2-0) picked up the win, working two hitless innings of relief and striking out two. Starter
Ross Kennell gave up three runs on five hits and struck out two in four innings. Senior
Kobie Hajdik struck out the side in the seventh and sophomore
Dylan Zarosky struck out the side in the ninth as the Huskies' pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts.
Jeff Sealy went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs for PVAM (5-9), while Robert Cossey went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Pedro Maldonado (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers, giving up six runs, five earned, on nine hits, while striking out three and walking four in 4.2 innings. Phillip Gay gave up four runs on six hits in only 2/3 of an inning.
The Panthers got on the board first, as Cody Den Beste singled in the first and scored on Sealy's double. Dominiq Harris then delivered an RBI single. The Huskies answered back with a single run in the bottom of the inning as junior third baseman
Curtis Jones drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Brown. HBU tied it up in the second as Wiggins led off with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by McCoy.
Josh Jefferson led off the third with a walk and scored on another RBI single by Sealy to give PVAM a 3-2 lead, but HBU responded with three-straight doubles by Brown, Nehrir and Wiggins to lead off the third to reclaim the lead and never looked back.
The Huskies tacked on two more in the fifth as senior designated hitter
Mike Chamberlain doubled and scored on a single by Martinez and Martinez came home on a single by Clay. HBU piled on with four in the sixth, with Brown and Nehrir leading off with back-to-back doubles and scoring on a two-run single by Wiggins. Martinez and Jarvis each added RBI singles.
Jarvis and Brown each had RBI singles in the eighth to cap the scoring.
HBU begins its first season in the Southland with a three-game series against Nicholls State Friday through Sunday in Thibodaux, La.
