Free Throws Lift UIW Past Men's Basketball in OT

Sophomore guard Rob Lewis scores season-high 22 points for Huskies.

SAN ANTONIO – Incarnate Word outshot HBU from the free throw line, 40-15, to overcome a 10-point, second-half deficit and pull out an 89-82 overtime victory over the Huskies in Southland Conference basketball Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

Sophomore guard Rob Lewis came off the bench and went 9-for-14 from the field to lead HBU (4-20, 1-11 SLC) with 22 points and added six rebounds. Freshman forward Colter Lasher tied his career-high with 14 points for the second-straight game and recorded his third-straight game in double figures. Sophomore forward Cody Joyce had 12 points, his seventh-straight game in double figures, and led the team with eight rebounds.

Denzel Livingston went 10-for-23 from the field and 15-for-18 from the line, outshooting HBU from the line by himself, to score 36 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for UIW (18-5, 6-4). Kyle Hittle had 19 points, going 6-for-13 from the field, missing all five of his 3-point attempts, to go for 19 points and nine rebounds. Sam Burmeister had 11 points and seven boards for the Cardinals.

HBU shot 48 percent from the field, including 6-for-16 from long distance, and 12-for-15 from the line. UIW shot 41 percent from the field, 3-for-19 from 3-point range, and 28-for-40 from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded the Huskies, 50-35.

Hittle gave UIW its first lead since late in the first half on a baseline drive to open the overtime period, but Lewis came back with a reverse layup. Livingston made a pair of free throws with 3:53 left, but neither team scored until Burmeister's layup with 1:29 left gave the Cardinals a four-point lead. Livingston made six-straight points to put UIW up by eight and put the game away. The Cardinals went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in overtime, while the Huskies did not attempt one.

UIW scored the first seven points of the game on hook by Ian Markolf, a three by Burmeister and a putback by Hittle, but Lasher knocked down a free-throw line jumper to get HBU on the board. Markolf made another hook in the lane, but Barton drove inside for a layup and Joyce scored over the top of 7-foot-1 Ian Markolf to make it a three-point game.

Lasher buried a three, then found junior center Ricmonds Vilde cutting to the basket for a layup to tie it, 11-11, with 10:50 remaining, but the Cardinals answered with a short jumper by Justin Phillippe and Phillippe later made one-of-two from the line. Vilde grabbed an offensive board and put it back, then the Huskies took their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by Lewis, 15-14, with 8:43 left. Livingston answered with a baseline jumper on the other end, but after three-straight defensive stops, Lewis weaved through the defense for a layup.

Mitchell Badillo made a layup, then Hittle made a short jumper, then Joyce scored inside for HBU. Badillo came back with another drive to the bucket, then Lewis drained an 18-footer, then a three to give the Huskies a 24-22 lead with 3:51 on the clock. Markolf tied it with a drive to the left side, but Lewis once again answered with a long jumper. Livingston tied it on a layup, but missed a free throw that would've given UIW the lead back, then Horton did give the Cardinals the lead with a baseline jumper. Lewis tied it on a fadeaway, then sophomore forward Dauson Womack's layup put HBU up by two. Livingston drove in to tie it again, but Womack drilled a three with 40 seconds left. Hittle's layup just before the buzzer cut the Huskies' lead to 33-32 at halftime.

HBU shot 44 percent from the field, 3-for-8 from behind the arc in the first half, while UIW shot 45 percent, but only 1-for-10 from 3-point range, and 3-for-8 from the free throw line. Both teams had 19 rebounds. Lewis led the Huskies with 13 points, while Livingston had eight for the Cardinals at the break.

Lewis opened the second half with a drive to the basket, but Anthony Horton responded with a free throw line jumper. Lasher nailed back-to-back threes to extend HBU's lead to 41-34 just a minute-and-a-half into the second frame. Hittle made a shot from the block, but Joyce got inside for an easy two and Lasher made two free throws to put the Huskies up by nine.

Burmeister made a three and Horton hit a pair of free throws to cut HBU's lead to four, but Lewis answered with a three. Livingston got a putback dunk and two free throws to make the score, 48-45, with 13:43 to go, then sophomore guard Caleb Crayton made a jumper and Joyce knocked down a pair from the line and freshman forward Alex Fountain found Vilde inside to stretch the Huskies' advantage back to nine.

Hittle went to the line for two more for the Cardinals, but Crayton answered with a baseline drive for a score, but couldn't convert the three-point play to make it a double-digit lead. Crayton's next drive to the hold did result in a three-point play to put the Huskies ahead by 10 with 11:05 on the clock.

Livingston converted on a three-point play, but Barton found Vilde for another inside bucket. Badillo ended up with an offensive rebound and a putback and Hittle a couple of free throws to cut HBU's lead to five, then Joyce hit two free throws. Livingston banked in a runner, freshman guard Reveal Chukwujekwu answered with a layup, but Livingston hit a three to make it 65-61. Chukwujekwu made a reverse layup, Hittle made the first of two free throws and Livingston's three-point play with 5:46 left made it a two-point game.

After Russell banked a floater off the glass, Mitchell Badillo made two free throws, then missed two that would've tied the game at the 4:23 mark. Chukwujekwu hit two free throws and HBU forced a miss on the other end, but the Cardinals were given possession of the ball. Livingston got a pair of free throws out of the missed call, but freshman guard Jimmy Barton put back his own miss to make HBU's lead four.

Hittle made a layup, then Lasher made one-of-two free throws to give HBU a 74-71 lead with 2:02 to go. Livingston also hit one-of-two, then after each team made a stop, Livingston made a layup to tie it with 50 seconds left, but missed the free throw that followed that would've given the Cardinals the lead. Lewis missed a baseline jumper with 27 seconds left, and Livingston missed with three seconds left, sending the game into overtime.

The Huskies return home for six of their last seven games, beginning with Oral Roberts Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
