Baseball Rallies to Complete Sweep of PVAM

Zach Nehrir, Jordan McCoy each go 3-for-4 for Huskies.

HOUSTON – HBU scored two to tie in the seventh, then pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth to clip Prairie View A&M, 4-3, and complete a season-opening three-game sweep Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.

The Huskies (3-0) opened the season with a three-game sweep for the first time since 2007 and only the fourth time in the program's 24 seasons.

Senior leftfielder Jordan McCoy went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run for the Huskies, while junior centerfielder Zach Nehrir went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Junior pitcher Curtis Jones had a double, an RBI and run and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Junior third baseman Josh Martinez's hitting streak came to an end at 15 games, but he did reach base on a walk.

Jones took a no-decision, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven in 6.1 innings. He and Martinez (1-0) switched positions and Martinez picked up the victory, allowing one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings.

Robert Cossey went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run, while Dominiq Harris drove in a pair for PVAMU (0-3).

Chadd Flick started for the Panthers, but took a no-decision, allowing one run on six hits in 5.2 innings. Jordan Stewart (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits in 2.1 innings.

PVAMU struck first in the top of the third, when Walter Wells led off with a single, and beat the throw to second on Cossey's chopper to third. After Greg Salcido walked to load the bases with two outs, Harris delivered a two-run single up the middle.

HBU scratched across a run in the sixth as Nehrir singled to right center and took second when the centerfielder had trouble corralling the ball. McCoy then ripped an RBI single into left to cut PVAMU's lead in half.

Grant Dougherty singled to lead off the seventh off Jones, then scored on Cossey's two-out double to dead center off Martinez to answer back and take a 3-1 lead.

Senior shortstop C.J. Jarvis grounded to second with one out, but reached and took advanced to second on a fielding error and a throwing error by the second baseman on the same play. Jones drove him in by lacing a double down the leftfield line, then Nehrir came through with a two-out RBI single to right center to tie the game, 3-3.

McCoy singled up the middle tot lead off the eight and went to second on sophomore rightfielder Austin Saenz's sacrifice bunt. Junior second baseman Clayton Vaughn reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners, then Jarvis laid down a squeeze to drive in the eventual game-winner.

The Huskies return to action when they travel to face UTSA Tuesday at 6 p.m. in San Antonio.
