TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Rebekah Tovar's second-half goal tied the match at 1-1, but Tulsa scored the eventual game winner with eight minutes left in regulation to defeat the visiting Huskies, 2-1, Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.
The Golden Hurricane struck first on a goal by Bradi Hinch in the 30th minute, assisted by Jordan O'Brien. O'Brien sent a cross up the middle to Hinch, who scored from two yards out.
The goal gave Tulsa all the momentum, as HBU goalkeeper Stephanie Castellon battled to keep it a one-goal match by stopping two shots three minutes apart. Tulsa had one last chance before the end of the half to increase its lead, as the Golden Hurricane was awarded a corner kick, but Alexis Sidorakis' shot went high.
Tulsa outshot HBU in the first half, 7-0, as Castellon made three saves. Each team had a corner kick.
HBU nearly tied it and took the lead in the first few minutes of the second half, as Molly Missimer's shot hit the post, then Allison Abendschein's shot was saved by Tulsa goalkeeper Hayley Harryman.
The pressure finally persevered for the Huskies, as, two minutes after Abendschein's shot, Rebekah Tovar scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the 58th minute. After a foul by Tulsa, Tovar hit the back of the net off a free kick from 22 yards out.
The match went back and forth until the 73rd minute, when Shelby Horn stopped three shots and one shot rang off the post in a span of 1:37.
Following a foul on the Huskies in the 82nd minute, Tulsa unbroke the tie with a goal from Camille Pelley, assisted by Lauren King and Claire Nicholson.
The Huskies tried to tie the match in the waning minutes of regulation, but could not get a shot off.
Horn took the loss in goal, as both she and Castellon made three saves while allowing one goal. Harryman made one save while allowing one goal in the winning effort.
HBU (0-1-0) will conclude the road trip at North Texas on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 pm.
