HUMBLE, Texas --
Lakesha Cameron and
Jessica Whitt were double winners and HBU won 11 events on the final day as the Huskies finished second at the final Great West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at Turner Stadium.
Cameron, who was named Freshman of the Year for her efforts, won the 100 in 11.80 and the 200 with a wind-aided 23.99, the fastest time of her career. She also helped the Huskies to gold in the 4x100 and silver in the 4x400. 2012 champion
Brittane Gaines was second in the 100 for HBU, and ran on the winning 4x100 with
Amber Goodson and
Skyla Williams.
Whitt raced to a season best in the 800, winning in 2:13.73, after capturing the 1500 gold to open the day with a time of 4:42.23.
Bria Guerin was the bronze medalist in the 800, while
Hiba Kreidie grabbed the bronze in the 1500.
The male Freshman of the Year award was won by
Saheed Okunnu, who won the triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 14.56/47-9.25, adding that medal to his bronze from the high jump. Fellow Husky freshman
Garrison Fick, the indoor Freshman of the Year, was second behind Okunnu in the triple jump.
Closing out his HBU career in superb fashion,
Jake Adkins added gold in the discus to the gold he won in the shot put yesterday. His winning throw of 47.65/156-4 was more than 10 feet better than teammate and runner-up
Jarrett Gilliam as the pair went 1-2.
Defending the title he won as a freshman last year,
Brice Christian led a 1-2-3 finish by HBU's men in the 400 with a 48.97 clocking ahead of
David Hicks and
LaDarien Harris. Those three teamed up with
Jarell McFarland to win the 4x400, as Harris sealed the gold in dramatic fashion over the final five meters, and they picked up bronze in the 4x100 relay with
Brandon Boyd.
Coming back from a victory in the 3000 steeplechase Saturday night,
Matt Perri outkicked Josh McCabe of Utah Valley over the final 200 to win the 5000 meters in 15:07.67, and
Amber Goodson regained the 100 hurdles title she won two years ago as a freshman, zipping to a 14.08.
Kourtney Lofton was third and
Desiree Scott took fourth behind Goodson. Scott got a bronze in the triple jump at 11.21/36-9.5.
Other medalists Sunday for the Huskies were
Sharonda Bryant, second in the 400 and lead-off leg on the 4x400, and freshmen
Shawn O'Brien, who ran a lifetime best 15.00 to take silver in the 110 hurdles, and
Roneisha Webb, who placed third in the 400 hurdles and ran on the 4x400.
Kenisa Haynes had a strong carry on the third leg of the 4x400 to collect silver.
Jade Penick nearly broke her third school record of the weekend in taking third in the discus, throwing a lifetime-best 42.54/139-7.
Utah Valley swept the team titles for the fifth time in five tries.
