Jarrett Gilliam and
Jade Penick broke their own HBU records in the hammer throw, and freshman
Gabriela Busquet was a surprise record-setter in the women's 10,000 meters Friday on the first day of the final Great West Conference track and field championships at Turner Stadium.
Gilliam kicked off the day for the Huskies with a 55.31m/181-5 throw in the final round to add 26 centimeters to his previous record and claim third place. Fellow senior
Jake Adkins was fourth with a huge lifetime best toss of 52.61m/172-7.
In the final round of the women's hammer, Penick added almost three feet to her previous school standard with a throw of 48.64/159-7 to place third.
Running in her 10,000 debut, Busquet stayed with the lead pack most of the way and shattered the old HBU record with her 38:30.49, slicing more than 30 seconds off the existing mark as she finished fifth.
The Huskies also picked up points in the women's javelin, where
Cassie Juarez was sixth and
Chinnoya Adiukwu was eighth.
HBU's women are third in the point standings after the first day, while the men are fifth. Four-time defending team champs Utah Valley lead both team title races. Competition gets under way Saturday at 1 p.m. with field event finals, and running prelims begin at 4:50.
