INDIANAPOLIS -- HBU's Brittane Gaines and Matt Perri Thursday were announced as qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round, scheduled for May 23-25 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Gaines will be making her second straight appearance in the NCAA postseason in the 100 meters, while Perri will run the 3000-meter steeplechase in his debut. Gaines was 29th in the prelims last year at Austin, missing a spot in the semifinals by only two places. Perri is the first HBU male track and field athlete to qualify for the postseason.

The top 48 declared athletes in each event in the West region gained selection to the meet, which serves as the preliminary round to the NCAA Championships to be held in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8. The East preliminary round is held at Greensboro, N.C. The top 12 individual finishers in each event at the preliminary competition will advance to Eugene.

Perri, the Great West Conference indoor MVP and the outdoor steeplechase and 5000-meter champion this year, clocked 9:00.93 at the Texas Relays in March to set a school record and end up 48th on the qualifying list. Gaines, a four-time GWC indoor 60-meter dash gold medalist, had an 11.65 at the McNeese Spring Time Classic in April that put her No. 42 on the list of qualifiers.

Competition in the women's 100 starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, and the men's steeplechase is at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24.
