HOUSTON --
Brittane Gaines and
Amber Goodson overcame unusually chilly conditions to win their specialties, and
Anthony Aguinaga broke the school record in the 800 Saturday at the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet as the Huskies competed in their final tune-up before hosting the Great West Conference championships May 3-5.
Gaines dashed to the 100 meters title in 12.01, outleaning Rice's Candice Springer for the win, while Goodson clocked 14.50 in the 100 hurdles to top teammate
Kourtney Lofton. Aguinaga's 1:54.14 placed him fourth and trimmed .03 off the previous record.
In other women's events, freshman
Lakesha Cameron was the top collegian in the 200, finishing second overall with a 24.60, and
Jessica Whitt placed second in the 1500 with a season-best 4:37.77. Another freshman,
Roneisha Webb, lowered her personal best to 63.96 to take second in the 400 hurdles, and
Jade Penick threw a season-best 47.26/155-1 for second in the hammer.
Desiree Scott was the third-place collegian in the long jump and triple jump and also finished fifth in the 100H.
Bria Guerin clocked 2:15.24 in the 800 to take fourth with a 2013 best, while
Skyla Williams took third in the 100.
For the men, GWC indoor MVP
Matt Perri raced to a second-place finish in the 1500 at 3:52.26, and freshman
Shawn O'Brien dropped his PR to 15.21 to finish as the second collegian in the 110 hurdles.
Brice Christian (long jump - 7.15/23-5.5) and freshman
Saheed Okunnu (triple jump - 14.25/46-9) both recorded lifetime bests and were the top collegiate placers.
Jake Adkins had a pair of personal bests on the day, taking third in the shot put and hammer, while
Jarrett Gilliam was the top collegian in the hammer and threw a PR in the shot.
