LAKE CHARLES -- It took two tries, but HBU senior
Brittane Gaines came away as an impressive winner of the women's 100 meters Saturday at the McNeese Spring Time Classic at Cameron Communications Field.
Gaines, who became the first Husky to qualify for NCAA post-season competition last year, won the re-run of the dash in 11.65 seconds, her best time of the season and a mark that puts her in position to make a return trip to the NCAA regional meet in May. Two sections had to be re-run after officials discovered they had used the wrong start line for the original race, causing the athletes to run 110 meters instead of 100. Freshman
Lakesha Cameron made it a 1-2 HBU finish with her 11.87.
Jessica Whitt won the 800 for the second week in a row, clocking 2:16.29 to take section one by more than two seconds.
Bria Guerin was second overall for the Huskies with a season-best 2:16.77 to win section two.
The third HBU victory went to 2011 Great West Conference champion
Amber Goodson, who improved to 14.00 to win the 100 hurdles and solidify her lead in the league rankings.
Cameron came close to breaking the school record in the 200, zipping to a 24.16 to finish as the top collegian in third place behind Jamaica's Patricia Hall, a silver medalist in the 4x400 at the 2011 World Championships.
Hiba Kreidie was second in the mile at 5:07.43, while
Matt Perri placed third in the men's mile.
Sharonda Bryant recorded a big personal best in the 400 with her 56.37, and
Jade Penick had a season best in the discus with her 40.82/133-11 throw.
The Huskies travel across town April 20 for the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet.
