HOUSTON – Down 6-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, Houston Baptist scored five runs and had the tying run in scoring position, but couldn't plate it, as the Huskies lost game one, 6-5. The Huskies could only muster one hit against McNeese State in a 2-0 loss to the Cowgirls in game two Saturday afternoon from Husky Field.

Seven different Huskies had a hit in game one, as six of those hits came in the seventh inning. Lauren Schwirtlich, Kirsten Schwirtlich, Melissa Herman, and Victoria Granchelli each had an RBI.

Sarah Shotton (3-6) went the distance in the circle, allowing 11 hits, six runs (five earned), and one walk while striking out four.

Alanna DiVittorio had a game-high three RBI, while Ashley Modzelewski went 3-for-4 with two RBI for McNeese State.

Jamie Allred (14-3) earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits, four runs, and one walk while striking out four in 6.0+ innings. Meagan Bond recorded her third save, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two in one inning.

It was a pitcher's duel in the first half of the game, as the only run was a Taylor Goree RBI single for the Cowgirls. Prior to that, Modzelewski hit a one-out single and was pinch-run by Kelsey Jolly. The Huskies caught Jolly stealing second. The next batter, Marissa Koetting, hit a double, so the caught stealing proved to be a critical play.

McNeese State then broke the game open with a two-run fourth and a three-run fifth. Modzelewski hit a two-run homer in the fourth and DiVittorio hit a three-run shot in the fifth.

Only held to one hit through six innings, the Huskies made their move in the seventh. Rebecca Rademacher started things off with a leadoff triple, then scored on a sac bunt. Herman then doubled home K. Schwirtlich, followed by a two-run homer by V. Granchelli and suddenly the score was 6-4 and still nobody out. The Cowgirls brought in Bond, who gave up two straight singles. With runners at first and second, Bond got two straight strikeouts. L. Schwirtlich singled up the middle, scoring Lauren Powers to make the score 6-5. With the tying run at second, the Cowgirls got a foul pop-up to end the game.

HBU was held to just one hit in game two, as L. Schwirtlich went 1-for-3, extending her hitting streak to five games and her on-base streak to 20.

Keely Shuler (4-5) started in the circle and took the loss, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), while striking out one in 3.1 innings. Kendall Stiefel pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed one hit while striking out one.

Lauren Langner led McNeese State with two hits, while Modzelewski and Koetting each had an RBI.

Bond (15-4) earned the win in the circle, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.

Modzelewski's fielder's choice which scored Victoria Rich in the top of the third and Koetting's lead-off homer in the top of the fourth was all the scoring Bond needed.

The Huskies went down in order in the seventh. Katie Roux made a fantastic diving stop to her left for the second out of the inning.

HBU (13-18, 6-11 SLC) and McNeese State (31-10, 12-3 SLC) will conclude the weekend series Sunday at 2 pm.
