CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi broke a 3-3 tie with a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take game one, but Houston Baptist answered with a 12-4 six-inning win in game two to even the series at 1-1 Saturday afternoon from Chapman Field.
Mac Christensen led HBU (6-6, 1-1 SLC) at the plate, going 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored. Lindsey Lyles led TAMU-Corpus Christi (6-16, 1-1 SLC), going 5-for-6 with three RBI.
In game one, five of the seven total runs came in the second inning. HBU led the Islanders 3-0 going into the bottom of the second, as
Holly Webb and
Callie Herrington scored on an error and
Lauren Schwirtlich had an RBI single.
Corpus Christi answered with two runs in the bottom half to trail the Huskies 3-2, as Laura Phillips had a two-run single.
The Islanders tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the third. J.J. Jackson hit a two-out double and Cassie Carroll brought her home with an RBI single.
Lyles played hero for Corpus Christi in the bottom of the seventh, as her single to third scored an Islander to give the hosts a 4-3 game one win.
Holly Webb went 2-for-2 for HBU, while L. Schwirtlich and
Kate Maddock each had an RBI.
Keely Shuler went the distance in the losing effort, allowing 10 hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks, while striking out one.
Lyles led the Islanders, going 3-for-3. Constance Bradenburg earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and four walks.
There was no scoring in the first inning in game two. The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead.
Michaela Granchelli reached base safely on a bunt, advanced to second on an Islander error, then scored on an RBI double by Christensen.
The Huskies added a run in the top of the third, as
Kirsten Schwirtlich reached base on an error, then advanced to third and crossed home following consecutive wild pitches.
HBU exploded in the top of the fourth with a five-run inning to break the game open, 8-0. Pinch runner

Daniella Rodarte tripled to right field, scoring Herman. Rodarte scored the final run in the inning, crossing home on an Islander error.
Corpus Christi got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Lyles had a two-run triple.
HBU scored three more times in the top of the fifth to take an 11-2 lead. After a leadoff single by Christensen and a walk to L. Schwirtlich, Rademacher advanced each runner 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Herman singled to right center, scoring Christensen. L. Schwirtlich scored on a throwing error.
The Islanders scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to trail the Huskies, 11-4. With the bases loaded, Hayley Galloway reached on a fielders choice, as the Huskies got the runner out at second, while Michelle Sorensom scored. Valerie Perez walked with the bases loaded.
HBU made it an eight-run game with a single run in the top of the sixth. Christensen started the inning getting hit by the pitch then scored on an RBI single by K. Schwirtlich. The Islanders tried to keep the game going with two runners on and one out in the bottom half of the inning, but the Huskies got a strike out and a fly out to end the game.

Sarah Shotton picked up the complete-game win in the circle, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and three walks, while striking out six.

HBU and Corpus Christi conclude the conference-opening series Sunday at 12 pm.
