HOUSTON -- School records in the men's 4x400 relay and women's javelin fell, and
Matt Perri grabbed silver in the 5,000 meters as HBU's track and field teams got the outdoor season in full swing at the 31st annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University's Holloway Field.
Brice Christian (49.2),
David Hicks (49.0), freshman
Korey Malone (48.9) and
LaDarien Harris (48.0) trimmed almost half a second off the previous HBU record in the 4x400, clocking 3:15.09 to finish second behind Northeastern in section two of the final.
In the women's javelin,
Cassie Juarez added five centimeters to her own school record with a throw of 35.83/117-6 to take seventh.
Perri was the top Husky in Friday's distance carnival, rolling to a lifetime-best 14:40.02 to finish on the heels of Rice's John Cavallo.
Hiba Kreidie also came close to her school record in the women's 5,000, running 18:07.75 to place sixth overall.
Brittane Gaines, the Great West Conference dash champion last year, was fifth in the 100 at 11.93 and freshman
Lakesha Cameron was eighth at 12.12. Cameron also zipped to a 24.89 into the wind in the 200 to take eighth, and she and Gaines teamed up with Juarez and
Skyla Williams to record a season best of 46.28 to finish sixth in the 4x100.
Personal bests went to
Sharonda Bryant (57.26) and
Kenisa Haynes (57.59) in the 400, and they came back later to help the Huskies to a season best in the 4x400 with
Bria Guerin and
Roneisha Webb.
Ulysses Montoya clocked a personal best in the men's 800, crossing the line at 1:54.88, and
Anthony Aguinaga lowered his lifetime best in the 1500 to 3:51.58.
Running her first race since being injured at last year's GWC indoor conference meet, 2011 100 hurdles champion
Amber Goodson showed she is on her way back to top form with a 14.62. Freshman
Desiree Scott had an impressive pair of performances in the long jump and triple jump, going 11.08/36-4.25 in the latter, while freshman
Garrison Fick cleared a personal best 1.88/6-2 to take eight in the men's high jump.
Seniors
Jake Adkins and
Jarrett Gilliam placed seventh and eighth in the discus and Gilliam added an eighth-place effort in the hammer with a season-best 52.87/173-5.
The Huskies travel to Austin Thursday-Saturday for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the University of Texas.
