HBU Men & Women Win GWC Indoor Track & Field Titles

Full Results

HOUSTON -- History was made Sunday as the HBU men's and women's track and field teams won the school's first-ever Great West Conference team titles in dramatic fashion.

Facing a two-point deficit coming into the 4x400, HBU's men needed to beat Utah Valley by one place to tie or two places to win. A strong opening leg by Brice Christian gave the Huskies control of the race, and freshman Jarell McFarland kept the quartet in the race before handing off to LaDarien Harris.

It was on Harris' carry that the race changed drastically. Coming off the bend after 150 meters, Utah Valley's Allah Laryea-Akrong was challenging for the lead but suffered an injury and fell to the track. This left the path wide open for HBU, and anchorman Darryl McCullum powered to the line to seal the win at 3:22.81. UVU did not finish, and the Huskies came away with a 175-167 margin of victory.

After a spree of individual event wins in the 60, 200, 400, 800, 60 hurdles and triple jump, the Huskies entered the women's 4x400 relay with a 12-point cushion and no need to even contest the event, but Morgan Pressley completed her perfect day with a 56.8 anchor leg to give HBU a 3:52.68 win. Sharonda Bryant led off with a 58.8, and then Roneisha Webb split 58.9 before handing off to Kenisa Haynes, who clocked 58.2. Those 10 points put the Huskies at 198 to UVU's 184.

HBU head coach Theresa Fuqua was voted Coach of the Year for both men and women, and Pressley and Matt Perri were selected as the female and male outstanding performers of the meet. Lakesha Cameron and Garrison Fick earned Newcomer of the Year accolades.

Here's a look at how both team titles were won:

Sprints/Hurdles -- The Huskies started Sunday with a 1-2 finish in the women's 60 hurdles. Freshman Desiree Scott set a lifetime best of 8.93 to take gold, with Kourtney Lofton claiming silver at 9.04. Freshman Shawn O'Brien placed fifth in the men's 60H.

Pressley was next up on the track and led a 1-2-4-6 HBU finish with a season-best 57.41 clocking. Bryant was second at 58.59, and Haynes took fourth at 58.75. Freshman Webb nabbed a point in sixth at 59.64. Christian took second in the men's 400 with a stellar 49.91, and Harris was fourth.

Winning her fourth GWC title, Brittane Gaines was at the front of a 1-4 sweep of the 60, stopping the clock at 7.63 ahead of Cameron, freshman Reagan Jones and Skyla Williams. Senior Brandon Boyd grabbed a valuable point with a sixth-place effort in the men's 60.

Cameron turned the tables in the 200 with a 25.26 victory, two places ahead of Haynes. Jones finished fifth, and Gaines was sixth. Bronze in the men's 200 went to Christian at 22.47.

Middle & Long Distance -- After wins in the 5000 and the distance medley relay Friday, Perri faced a mile and a 3000 on the final day. He finished third in the mile behind teammate Anthony Aguinaga, who was second in a season-best 4:14.91, and then ran a gutsy 3K to come away with gold in 8:42.28. Aguinaga, who was second in the 800, surged with 150 to go and overtook three runners to take silver. Jordan Claypool was fifth in the 800.

Jessica Whitt and Hiba Kreidie put together a silver-bronze finish in the mile before Whitt came back to win the 800 in 2:17.97 ahead of her sister, Jamie, who was the runner-up. Bria Guerin made a mad dash down the home stretch to place fourth. Kreidie capped off the day with a fourth-place effort in the 3000.

Field Events -- The first gold of the day on the field came from Pressley in the triple jump. Her leap of 11.08/36-4.25 put her atop the podium, with freshman Emily Sacky winning bronze and Lofton taking fourth ahead of Scott.

Jake Adkins delivered a lifetime best 15.81/51-10.5 on his final attempt to win his third straight GWC shot put title. Jarrett Gilliam was third, also scoring a personal best at 14.77/48-5.5.

Freshmen Garrison Fick and Saheed Okunnu won gold and bronze in the triple jump after splitting bronze in the high jump. Darrell Dotson added a fourth-place finish in the TJ.

Erin Buck set a season best of 12.22/40-1.25 for sixth in the women's shot put.
