HOUSTON -- Matt Perri won the opening event of the meet Saturday and added a stunning 1600 anchor leg on the distance medley relay to lead HBU's men to the top of the points table on day one of the final Great West Conference indoor track and field championships at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Perri broke away two-thirds of the way through the 5000 meters and rolled to a 14:55.13 to beat 2012 champion Josh McCabe of Utah Valley. He came back in the final event, the DMR, to add a 4:12.2 mile carry that saw him hold off a charging UTPA runner and grab the win at 10:18.59. Ulysses Montoya (1200), Darryl McCullum (400) and Javier Zamora (800) gave Perri a lead he never relinquished as the Huskies won the event for the first time in the five-year history of the meet.

Brice Christian, last year's outdoor GWC freshman of the year, captured the long jump gold with a season-best 6.91/22-8 effort. Freshman Garrison Fick's personal best earned him the bronze behind Christian.

In the men's 35-pound weight throw, Jake Adkins unleashed a 2013 best of 16.17/53-0.75 to win the silver, with Jarrett Gilliam taking bronze at 15.75/51-8.25.

HBU's men have 50 points to lead UTPA (31), defending champs Utah Valley (23), Chicago State (14) and NJIT (5).

The Huskies defended their title in the women's DMR after a blowout leadoff leg where Jessica Whitt opened a sizable gap on the field on her 1200 carry. Sharonda Bryant (400) and Jamie Whitt (800) maintained that lead and Hiba Kreidie cruised the final 1600 to give HBU a 13-second victory in 12:28.08.

Gold and a meet record were claimed by Morgan Pressley in the long jump with a school-record leap of 5.84 meters/19-2. Teammates Desiree Scott, Cassie Juarez and Reagan Jones went 4-5-6 to add to the Huskies' tally. Jade Penick nabbed bronze in the 20-pound weight throw at 15.19/49-10, and Scott set a school record with 3004 points to take fifth in her pentathlon debut.

Utah Valley leads the women's team standings with 104 points followed by UTPA at 41, HBU at 35, NJIT at 23 and Chicago State at 6.

Qualifying heats on the track saw the Huskies run rampant, especially in the women's 200 where HBU runners had the six fastest times. Freshman Lakesha Cameron topped all qualifiers with a lifetime best clocking of 24.95. Three-time champion Brittane Gaines was the leading qualifier in the 60 at 7.52, and Cameron (7.61), Skyla Williams (7.68) and Reagan Jones (7.77) added PR's to advance.

Pressley and Bryant had the top two qualifying times in the 400, and the Whitt twins and Bria Guerin were the three fastest advancers in the 800. Kourtney Lofton and Scott took the top two spots in the 60 hurdles with PR's of 8.92 and 8.96.

For the HBU men, Anthony Aguinaga was the leading qualifier in the 800 at 1:57.70, and Christian led a group of three Huskies to advance in the 400. Christian also moved on in the 200 and Brandon Boyd qualified for the 60 final.

Sunday's events begin at 9 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60 hurdles, and field event and running finals start at 11. Admission is free.
